About

A membership system, and not much else

Member & Co. does one job: tell you who is about to lapse, let you renew them, and keep a complete record of everything you have ever sold.

Why it exists

Most independent gyms, studios and academies do not lose people because of the equipment or the teaching. They lose them because a membership ran out, nobody noticed, and by the time anybody did the habit had gone.

The tools available tend to sit at two extremes. A spreadsheet is free and immediate, but it cannot tell you who lapses tomorrow and it destroys the previous period every time you record a renewal. A full club-management suite can do everything, at a price and a setup cost that make no sense for a single location.

There is a lot of room in between for something that does the membership part properly and leaves the rest alone. That is the whole idea.

Principles

What the product will not compromise on

History is never overwritten

A renewal creates a new membership period. It does not edit the previous one. This is the single most important decision in the product: it means you can always answer how long somebody has been with you, how many times they renewed, and what they were paying two years ago.

Nothing important is stored twice

Membership status is computed from the end date every time it is read, never saved in a column that can go stale. A number that can disagree with reality eventually will.

Money is optional, and off is a real choice

Plenty of businesses take payment somewhere else and only want the roll. Switching payment tracking off removes every price and revenue surface rather than showing zeroes — and switching it back on brings every recorded amount back untouched.

Tenants are separated in the database

Row-level security means one business's records are unreachable from another's, enforced by Postgres rather than by a filter in application code that somebody might forget to write.

The vocabulary follows the trade

An academy sees students, a gym sees members. Software that makes a karate school read the word gym all day is software built for somebody else.

Where it is up to

Member & Co. is early. The membership core — members, plans, renewals, history, reminders and optional payment tracking — is built and in use. Subscription billing is not live yet, which is why everything is currently free to use.

We would rather say that plainly than imply a maturity the product has not earned. If something on this site describes behaviour you cannot find in the app, tell us and we will fix the page.
